Free Will Is An Illusion
What choice did you have
To be the person you are?
None! Life's such a bitch
"Take a moment to think about the context in which your next decision will occur: You did not pick your parents or the time and place of your birth. You didn't choose your gender or most of your life experiences. You had no control whatsoever over your genome or the development of your brain. And now, your brain is making choices on the basis of preferences and beliefs that have been hammered into it over a lifetime — by your genes, your physical development since the moment you were conceived, and the interactions you have had with other people, events, and ideas. Where is the freedom in this? Yes, you are free to do what you want even now. But where did your desires come from?"― Sam Harris, Free Will
So I have been having enthralling conversations with friends of mine about the subject of free will and fate.
They are in the school of thought that people have a "choice."
They believe people can choose to be and do what they want.
I am in the school of thought that people are what they are and have no choice but to be anything more than what they were born to be.
Harsh, cynical, cold, but it's not false.
Fate and predeterminism are the truth to this "reality" (for lack of a better word).
I say, for "lack of a better word" for "reality" because we have NO PROOF that this "reality" is even real.
For all we know, this could be a simulation. We could all just be reliving or projecting the lives that we have already lived because our "reality" is stuck in a black hole.
Or this could all just be a dream.
And to be even more outlandish, paraphrasing a bit from Sam Harris, the universe could have just sprung up 5 seconds ago, and all our "memories" of our childhoods are nothing more than implanted memories that the universe, the designer, the…meh 🙄… "creator" imbued into all of us.
